Abstract

This chapter introduces MODTWIN, a method for model-driven engineering of digital twins (DTs) specifically designed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The method addresses the challenges SMEs face in adopting DTs, focusing on both technological and organizational aspects. The approach is demonstrated through three case studies in different domains: HVAC, smart farming, and intralogistics. The method is structured into three phases: Preparation, Construction, and Application, each with specific components and outputs. The MODTWIN tool supports domain experts in creating domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs) and conceptual models, enabling the automated configuration of DTs. The organizational integration of the method is also discussed, highlighting the roles of domain experts and system admins, and addressing aspects such as resource readiness, IT readiness, and cognitive readiness. The evaluation of the method in real-world case studies confirms its effectiveness in supporting the development and organizational integration of DTs in SMEs. The findings underscore the potential of MODTWIN to bridge a critical gap in current MDE approaches, facilitating the wider adoption of DT technology in SMEs.
