The subject of transmissions is central to any consideration of hybrid and electric cars, despite the fact that electronic systems play a much greater role in these transmissions than they have done in the past. A solution is needed that offers good performance together with high levels of efficiency and affordability. A two-speed gearbox is a compromise that could effectively meet these requirements. However, this does not simply mean integrating a second gear into an existing box. Instead the transmission, electric motor and inverter need to be carefully coordinated to achieve the best possible efficiency against the background of the car's limits and the driving cycles. …
