Moment-Gradient Factor for Perforated Cellular Steel Beams Under Lateral Torsional Buckling

Abstract

In this paper, the lateral torsional buckling failure of Indian beam section has been numerically investigated. Experiments were carried out on perforated cellular beams subject to four-point loading. Experimental results were used to validate the numerical model developed in ANSYS. A good agreement is observed in the results obtained from numerical and experimental investigations. A parametric study, to observe the variation of moment-gradient factor with various span lengths, has been undertaken. A total of 192 FE models are analysed where cellular beams subject to equal end moments and concentrated load at midspan were considered and observations were made with respect to the nondimensional slenderness ratio \(\lambda _{\mathrm{LT}}\) given by the Indian Standard. A reduction factor is introduced to quantify the variation and to obtain modified values of moment-gradient factor for lower values of \(\lambda _{\mathrm{LT}}\).
