Abstract

The article presents a detailed study on monitoring corrosion in pipeline distribution networks, focusing on the Patna urban distribution network in India. It employs the weight loss method to measure the corrosion rate and image processing techniques using MATLAB to analyze pitting corrosion. The research highlights the impact of corrosion on pipeline operational life and cost, and discusses the limitations of traditional corrosion indices. The study area is the Patna urban distribution network, where galvanized iron coupons were used for monitoring. The article provides a thorough analysis of physicochemical parameters, uniform corrosion rates, and pitting corrosion areas, concluding that scaling behavior can protect the pipeline surface from corrosion. The use of advanced techniques like Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-ray Diffraction further enhances the understanding of corrosion mechanisms and chemical compositions of corrosion products. The article offers valuable insights into the balance between corrosion and scaling, making it a must-read for professionals in the field of corrosion control and water treatment.
