Major improvements in efficiency over recent decades have mainly been the result of the introduction of new technologies and processes for combustion and mixture formation. One example is the transition from the carburetor to fuel injection, initially in the inlet manifold and then, from the mid-1990s, in the form of direct injection. The continuous increases in production quality, including tolerances in the micrometer range, that have made today's compression ratios possible and the introduction of turbochargers into large production engines from the beginning of the new millennium onward have resulted in significant advances in development.
