Abstract

Microplastics (MPs), a persistent environmental hazard, are synthetic materials with diameters less than 5 mm, originating from both primary and secondary sources. Their insoluble nature and resistance to degradation make them a significant threat to aquatic life and human health. The chapter discusses the classification, characterization, and sources of MPs, highlighting the impact of urbanization, industrialization, and waste management on their distribution. It also explores the environmental and health impacts, including the potential for MPs to cause liver damage, behavioral changes, and genotoxicity. The chapter further delves into the properties of MPs, including their physical, chemical, and biological aspects, and the challenges in identifying and characterizing them. It emphasizes the need for standardized methodologies and highlights the gaps in research, particularly regarding the toxicity of nanoplastics.
