Abstract

This chapter presents a two-stage procedure for identifying multiple damages in three-dimensional steel frame structures. The first stage uses the Modal Strain Energy-Based Index (MSEBI) to pinpoint potential damage locations by comparing pre- and post-damage states. The second stage employs the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to quantify the damage level in the identified elements, effectively filtering out diagnostic noise. The study validates this approach through numerical simulations on a 63-element 3D frame structure, demonstrating its accuracy in damage localization and severity assessment. The results show that the MSEBI index accurately identifies elements with damage levels greater than 5%, while the PSO algorithm achieves an accuracy of 97.8–100% in estimating damage levels, significantly reducing noise from the first step. This innovative method enhances structural health monitoring, ensuring early damage detection and maintenance of structural integrity.
