Abstract

This chapter explores the perception of safety in urban parks through a multi-method approach, combining systematic observations, perception mapping, and Brain EEG measurements. The study focuses on Green Park in Bengaluru, India, to identify factors influencing safety perceptions and usage patterns. Key findings reveal that visibility, lighting, and activity levels significantly impact how safe people feel in public spaces. Activity mapping highlights different zones of high and low activity throughout the day, while perception mapping identifies hotspots of perceived safety and insecurity. Brain EEG data provides objective insights into stress levels in various park areas, validating the results of perception mapping. The study concludes that well-lit, open spaces with high visibility and active usage are perceived as safer, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful landscape planning and illumination in urban park design. This comprehensive analysis offers valuable insights for architects, urban planners, and landscape architects aiming to enhance the safety and usability of public spaces.
