Abstract

The article delves into the complexities of estimating source-specific treatment effects using multi-source data, particularly focusing on survival outcomes. It highlights the importance of carefully specifying the inferential target population to ensure clear causal interpretations. The authors propose methods that integrate information from multiple data sources while estimating source-specific average treatment effects, addressing the limitations of naive pooling approaches. The article also discusses the assumptions under which these methods are valid, including the conditional data source-outcome independence assumption, and explores the implications of violating these assumptions. Through simulation studies and an analysis of the HALT-C trial data, the authors demonstrate the performance and applicability of their proposed estimators. The findings underscore the importance of considering case-mix heterogeneity and the potential biases that can arise from ignoring it. The article concludes with a discussion on the broader implications of the proposed methods and their potential extensions to other settings.
