Abstract

The chapter delves into the state of electric aviation, emphasizing the need for more efficient and environmentally friendly propulsion systems. It introduces the concept of multifunctional structural batteries, which combine energy storage, structural health monitoring, and load-bearing capabilities. The MATISSE project, funded by the European Union, is highlighted for its development of advanced quasi-solid-state Li-ion battery cells and their integration into composite structures. The project aims to create a full-scale wingtip demonstrator for the Pipistrel Velis Electro, showcasing the potential of these batteries to reduce weight and improve safety in aircraft.
