Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricate dynamics of multiphase flows with viscoplastic materials, which exhibit both solid and fluid properties. It introduces a sophisticated numerical framework that combines Variational Multi-Scale (VMS) methods with a regularisation technique for Bingham rheology and Level-Set methods to track fluid interfaces. This framework is applied to two key problems: viscoplastic dripping, where a filament stretches and breaks under gravity and surface tension, and bubble rising in a viscoplastic medium, where buoyancy forces are counteracted by the material's yield stress. The results are analysed through energy budgets, force balances, and scaling laws, revealing the critical role of plasticity in these flows. The chapter concludes with perspectives for future research, highlighting the potential to extend these studies to more complex, three-dimensional industrial scenarios.
