Abstract

The article delves into the multiscale simulation of droplet solidification during spray forming, a complex process where liquid droplets are atomized and deposited onto a substrate. It combines macroscopic fluid dynamics with microscopic molecular dynamics and phase field methods to investigate the cooling and solidification behavior of droplets in flight. The study highlights the differential thermal histories and solid fractions of droplets based on their size, and proposes a model to estimate cooling rates and secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) using molecular dynamics and phase field simulations. The results provide valuable insights into the microstructural evolution and solute distribution within droplets, contributing to the optimization of spray forming processes and the quality of deposited materials.
