Bei bivariaten Analyseverfahren wird der Zusammenhang von zwei Merkmalen untersucht (z. B. Bildung und Einkommen). Bildung ist dabei die unabhängige Variable, das Einkommen die abhängige Variable. Das Einkommen wird aber nicht nur von der Bildung „abhängig“ sein, sondern auch von anderen Merkmalen wie Geschlecht, Berufstätigkeit und Wohnort.
