Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of municipal solid waste management, focusing on the optimization of garbage bin placement in Istanbul. By integrating Discrete Event Simulation (DES) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), the study aims to improve waste collection efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impacts. The research highlights the challenges posed by inadequate bin placement and the benefits of a well-optimized waste management system. The case study in Maltepe Municipality demonstrates how the implementation of these methods can lead to significant reductions in waste collection costs and CO2 emissions. The detailed analysis and results provide valuable insights into the practical application of these technologies in urban waste management.
