Abstract

MXenes, a new class of 2D materials discovered in 2011, have garnered significant attention for their exceptional properties, including high electrical conductivity, hydrophilicity, and tuneable structure. This chapter delves into the structural features of MXenes, their synthesis methods, and their promising applications in environmental remediation. MXenes are synthesized from MAX phases through etching and exfoliation, resulting in materials with unique properties that make them ideal for various environmental applications. The chapter highlights the use of MXenes in photocatalysis, adsorption, and membrane separation, showcasing their potential to address critical environmental challenges. The discussion also includes the challenges and future directions for optimizing MXenes for practical applications, making it a compelling read for those interested in the latest advancements in materials science and environmental remediation.
