Abstract

This chapter delves into the complex interplay between natural disasters, livelihood challenges, and the role of microfinance and self-help groups (SHGs) in the Sundarban region of West Bengal, India. It begins by discussing the devastating impact of cyclones and floods on the region's ecology and economy, emphasizing the need for effective coping strategies. The study focuses on the livelihood diversification strategies employed by households, particularly the use of integrated farming facilitated by SHGs. The chapter presents empirical data from a survey conducted after two major cyclones and the COVID-19 pandemic, revealing how SHGs and microfinance have helped households diversify their income sources and enhance resilience. The findings highlight the significant role of SHGs in promoting sustainable livelihoods and building long-term coping mechanisms. The chapter concludes with policy implications, suggesting that government support and infrastructure development are crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of microfinance and SHGs in disaster-prone regions.
