Semi-arid zones, characterized by low and erratic rainfall along with high evaporation rates, are becoming increasingly concerning in the context of climate change. The increase in temperatures, along with the decline in precipitation and moisture levels, are the primary cause of climate change in semi-arid regions, resulting in the more extreme climatic conditions. This phenomenon is characterized by changes in precipitation patterns, rising temperatures, and increased aridity. These shifts necessitates the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies for adaptation and mitigation, as they adversely affect nearly all components of the ecosystem, including agriculture, water resources, and human livelihoods. However, in semi-arid regions, water scarcity is a critical issue that necessitates the implementation of sustainable water management strategies, including the effective irrigation, water conservation, and catchment water harvesting. Furthermore, soil conservation strategies— including vegetative, engineering, and agronomic approaches, are highly effective in preventing soil erosion and maintaining soil fertility. The adoption and implementation of drought mitigation strategies including water conservation techniques, watershed management, and community empowerment— are crucial for enhancing adaptive capacity and reducing the severity of drought-related impacts. Biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration are crucial for ensuring ecosystem secularity and stability, supporting livelihoods, and minimizing the impacts of climate change. The key priorities involve managing protected areas, restoring habitats, controlling invasive species, and fostering community participation. In semi-arid regions, climate change also leads to additional socio-economic consequences, such as health issues, livelihood disruptions, and the continuation of poverty cycles. Addressing these socio-economic matters requires comprehensive sustainability strategies that include climate adaptation, sustainable development, and community participation. In conclusion, developing resilient and sustainable ecosystems in semi-arid regions demands a thorough understanding of, and adaptability to, the complex interactions unique to these environments. In this chapter, several types of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies for semi-arid regions will be examined, including water conservation, soil conservation, drought management, biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, as well as societal and economic factors.
