Abstract

This chapter explores the intricate relationship between complexity and periodization in Big History, focusing on the interplay between cosmic and biosocial dimensions. It begins by establishing complexity as a central concept in Big History and universal evolutionism, highlighting the ongoing transition to new and unknown states in the universe. The text delves into the challenges posed by traditional scientific perspectives, such as the second law of thermodynamics and the precarious stability of planetary environments, which seemingly hinder the development of complex life. Despite these obstacles, the chapter argues that the emergence of complex life and technological civilization on Earth suggests underlying mechanisms that facilitate complex evolution. The role of self-organization and self-regulation in evolutionary processes is emphasized, illustrating how open systems adjust through coordinated interactions to increase complexity. The chapter introduces the concept of periodization as a method to systematize the historical process, identifying key transformations that have shaped Big History. It discusses various approaches to periodization, including those based on energy flow, information processing, and organizational changes. The text also explores the accelerating trend of complexity growth in the universe, life, humans, and civilizations, and the potential reversals and driving forces behind this trend. The chapter concludes by highlighting the significance of periodization in organizing and structuring knowledge, providing a framework for understanding the complexity of Big History and its diverse interpretations.
