Abstract

This chapter delves into the impact of political advertising and disinformation on family discussions during election campaigns, focusing on generational differences in media literacy and the role of humor in maintaining family cohesion. The study reveals that a majority of respondents engage in family discussions about political campaigns, with mothers often initiating these conversations. Generation Z respondents frequently assert their superior ability to identify disinformation compared to their parents, highlighting a significant generational gap. The text also explores how political discussions can both strengthen and strain family relationships, with humor serving as a coping mechanism. The research concludes that while political polarization influences family dynamics, it does not necessarily lead to family breakdowns. The study provides valuable insights into how political advertising and disinformation shape family interactions and the importance of media literacy in navigating these challenges.
