13. Neighborhood Design: Walking Access to Urban Services and the Impact on Quality of Life in Kayseri

This chapter delves into the critical role of neighborhood design in shaping the quality of life through pedestrian access to essential urban services. Focusing on Sümer Yeni Mahalle in Kayseri, the study evaluates the accessibility of pre-primary, primary, elementary, and high school services, as well as health, worship, and green spaces. Using network analysis and GIS, the research identifies areas within the neighborhood that meet or fall short of the walking distance standards set by the Regulation on the Preparation of Spatial Plans. The findings reveal that while access to high schools and green spaces is sufficient, there are significant gaps in access to pre-primary, primary, and elementary schools, as well as health and worship services. The study concludes that although Sümer Yeni Mahalle has maintained a relatively high quality of life since its establishment, there is a need for improvements in service accessibility to further enhance the well-being of its residents. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of planning standards and offers recommendations for future urban planning initiatives aimed at improving quality of life through better access to urban services.
