Abstract—

This study delves into the nesting biology of the Pacific eider (Somateria mollissima v-nigrum) in Western Chukotka, a critical yet understudied region. Key topics include population trends, reproductive parameters, and the influence of meteorological factors on nesting success. The research reveals that the Pacific eider population is estimated at 150,000–200,000 individuals, with 30,000–60,000 in the Russian part of its range, though these figures are tentative due to limited data. The study highlights the importance of long-term monitoring, conducted from 2018 to 2024, which provides detailed insights into nesting habits, clutch sizes, and nest success rates. A notable finding is the impact of snowmelt dates and temperature variations on the timing of nesting, offering valuable ecological insights. The research also compares nesting parameters with those from North American populations, revealing potential differences due to the heterogeneity of northern biocenoses. This comprehensive study not only advances our understanding of the Pacific eider's nesting biology but also underscores the need for targeted research and conservation efforts in this key biodiversity area.
