Abstract

The chapter delves into the pressing issue of climate change, driven by the increasing levels of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. It discusses the science behind net zero emissions, explaining the balance between GHG emissions and removals needed to achieve this goal. The text highlights the global agreements and protocols, such as the Paris Agreement, that aim to limit temperature increases and reduce GHG emissions. It also provides case studies, like the UK’s efforts to achieve net zero by 2050, showcasing the specific actions and policies implemented by governments and businesses. Additionally, the chapter explores the consequences of not achieving net zero, emphasizing the severe impacts on ecosystems, resources, and economic sectors. By combining scientific knowledge and policy analysis, the chapter offers a holistic view of the global efforts to combat climate change and the importance of achieving net zero emissions.
