Abstract

The chapter delves into the innovative use of neuro-symbolic AI for inventive design, specifically focusing on a benzoic acid extraction installation from Styrax resin. It introduces the hybrid approach of neuro-symbolic AI, which combines the strengths of neural networks and symbolic AI to address longstanding challenges in AI, such as interpretability and robustness. The application of this approach in chemical engineering is exemplified through the design of the extraction installation, where AI systems optimize extraction techniques, maximizing yield and purity while minimizing environmental impact. The chapter also explores the methodology adopted in the design process, including data-driven modeling, iterative refinement through generative design algorithms, and the use of TRIZ and CSDT methodologies. The results showcase a comprehensive and optimized design that significantly improves the efficiency of benzoic acid extraction, aligning well with sustainability goals.
