Abstract

The article discusses the critical issue of solidification cracking in metals, which occurs during processes like welding and casting. It introduces a new computational technique, the Flow Resistance Technique (FRT), to evaluate the susceptibility of alloys to solidification cracking. The FRT is based on the backfilling phenomenon, where liquid metal fills the dendritic arms during solidification. The method ranks alloys by measuring the pressure drop of liquid metal between neighboring dendrites, with higher pressure drops indicating greater susceptibility to cracking. The article compares this approach with existing models and experimental data, demonstrating its effectiveness in predicting solidification cracking tendencies. By simplifying the evaluation process, the FRT offers a valuable tool for materials scientists and engineers to improve the quality and reliability of metal components.
