The article introduces a novel concept for hybrid electric powertrains designed to minimize emissions by utilizing CO2-neutral fuels. The focus is on developing a globally deployable internal combustion engine with maximum efficiency, aiming to bridge the gap between fully electric and hybrid vehicles. Key innovations include a Phase Change Cooling (PCC) system, which offers precise temperature control and reduces cooling system size, and advanced friction reduction technologies such as roller bearings. The NA16 demonstrator engine, featuring these innovations, has achieved a peak brake thermal efficiency of 44.2%, demonstrating the potential of these technologies to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of hybrid electric powertrains. The article also highlights the engine's compatibility with high EGR rates and its ability to maintain stable combustion, making it a promising solution for future hybrid vehicles.
