Have we missed the boat? Germany is seemingly about to lose its crown as an international pioneer in the area of environmental and climate protection. As things stand, climate targets will be missed by a country mile - including the undertaking to achieve a green energy share meeting 18 % of the country's primary energy requirements by 2020. Part of the blame for this shortfall can also be attributed to the transport sector, where the share of renewable energy was just 5.2 % in 2017. The traffic watershed has stalled. What is an important and meaningful expansion of electromobility moves at a snail's pace. However, electrifying the powertrain will only cover a small area of transport as purely battery-powered solutions reach their limits, for example, with aviation and shipping, but also heavy goods traffic.
