Abstract

This chapter delves into the latest trends in multiphase flow simulations, focusing on the slug capturing approach. It introduces a well-posed 5-equation formulation that overcomes the limitations of traditional methods, ensuring hyperbolicity even in vertical configurations. The chapter discusses the numerical method used to solve the system, including the finite volume method and fractional stepping method. It also explores closure models for handling viscous non-Newtonian liquids and presents numerical test cases to validate the method. The chapter concludes with a discussion on future research directions, highlighting the need for further investigation into low Mach preconditioning and higher-order spatial discretization.
