Abstract

This chapter delves into the multifaceted role of NGOs in shaping the legitimacy of international criminal justice, using the case study of Uganda. It explores how NGOs navigate the hegemonic structures of global justice and examines their strategies to counter these structures. By analyzing the work of local and international NGOs, the chapter uncovers how they both legitimize and delegitimize international criminal justice institutions. It highlights the complex interplay between NGOs, victims, and affected communities, and the impact of their work on the perception and acceptance of international justice mechanisms. The chapter also discusses the complementarity framework and the role of NGOs in domestic prosecutions, offering a nuanced understanding of the dynamics at play.
