Abstract

This chapter explores the significant energy costs associated with compressed air leaks in industrial settings, particularly in deep-level underground platinum mines. It introduces Flexim’s ultrasonic flow measurement technology, which uses the TransitTime method to measure the speed of sound in fluids, providing accurate and non-intrusive flow measurements. The solution involves deploying portable gas flowmeters that can be clamped onto pipes, saving time and reducing operational risks. This technology enables continuous monitoring of air consumption, early identification of maintenance needs, and optimization of compressor energy use. The chapter also discusses the dynamic demand for compressed air in mining operations and the importance of accurate flow measurement to reduce costs and enhance sustainability.
