Abstract

The article investigates the complex evolution of contact areas in soft contacts subjected to incipient torsional loading, revealing a non-monotonic behavior with an initial increase followed by a significant reduction. Through experiments with PDMS spheres and glass plates, the study finds that contact anisotropy is not necessary for area reduction and that shear-induced changes are more complex than previously thought. The research compares torsional loading with unidirectional shear loading, highlighting the general nature of the observed phenomena. The findings challenge existing models and suggest the need for further research to understand the underlying mechanisms.
