Abstract

The chapter delves into the unique properties of tire crumb rubbers, such as low density, high porosity, and excellent sound and vibration absorption capabilities, making them ideal for lightweight fill applications and seismic construction. It discusses the potential of waste tire rubber in various engineering applications, including asphalt mixtures, concrete, and plastic composites, highlighting their environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness. The study presents experimental results and DEEPSOIL software analysis, demonstrating the improved shear strength, energy absorption capacity, and ductility of soil with the addition of tire crumb mixtures. The nonlinear time-domain analysis using DEEPSOIL software shows significant reductions in Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) and effective stress with the use of gravel rubber mixture (GRM) layers, indicating the potential of GRM for enhancing seismic performance of soil. The findings suggest that a 1-meter thick GRM layer is optimal for improving soil response to seismic input, offering a cost-effective and sustainable solution for earthquake-resistant structures.
