Abstract

The article presents a groundbreaking method for enhancing the enzymatic hydrolysis of corn cobs using an acid–base mixture solution. By utilizing a combination of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and formic acid (HCOOH), the study demonstrates significant improvements in delignification and cellulose conversion. The research highlights the structural changes in corn cobs, as analyzed through X-ray diffraction (XRD), revealing a reduction in crystallinity that facilitates enzymatic digestion. The study also explores the reusability of the acid–base mixture solution, showing sustained efficiency over multiple pretreatment cycles. Furthermore, the article provides a detailed mechanistic explanation of the pretreatment process, offering a comprehensive understanding of how the acid–base mixture solution interacts with lignocellulosic biomass. The findings suggest a promising avenue for improving biomass conversion efficiency, with potential applications in biofuel production and other biotechnological processes.
