Abstract

This chapter explores the use of EPS geofoam as a lightweight fill material for highway embankments, focusing on its advantages in reducing settlement and ensuring long-term stability. The study presents a detailed case study of the I-15 Highway in Utah, where a triangular geofoam embankment was constructed next to and on top of the existing structure. The chapter discusses the standard construction cross-section for a geofoam embankment, which includes multiple layers such as base sand, geofoam blocks, a load distribution slab, and a pavement base course. The numerical modeling of the embankment is conducted using PLAXIS 2D, with a focus on the Hardening Soil model, Soft Soil model, and Linear Elastic model. The results of the settlement analysis reveal a typical pattern of decreasing settlement with depth, though an increase between 3 and 4.8 meters was observed due to material consolidation. The comparison between the PLAXIS model and field data underscores the importance of accurate subsoil characterization in predicting vertical stresses within embankments. The chapter concludes by highlighting the practical benefits of geofoam, such as ease of construction, resistance to settlement, and maintenance of structural integrity over time, supporting its broader application in infrastructure projects as a superior alternative to traditional fill materials.
