Abstract

The article discusses the application of numerical back analysis in underground bulk mining operations, focusing on the use of distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) for model calibration. It highlights the challenges of traditional point-sensing methods and introduces DOFS as a robust alternative. The study presents a case history from the Young Mine, an underground zinc mine in Tennessee, where DOFS was employed to monitor a pillar recovery operation. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of DOFS in providing high-density sensor coverage and accurate data for model calibration, leading to more confident and reliable forward analysis of future mining operations.
