Abstract

The chapter delves into the potential of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) as a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment, highlighting the energy stored in wastewater and the challenges of current treatment methods. It presents a comprehensive model for MFCs, focusing on the double-chamber design and the impact of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on voltage output. Through detailed simulations, the study demonstrates the negative correlation between HRT and voltage, and explores the influence of flow rate and membrane thickness on MFC performance. The findings offer valuable insights for optimizing wastewater treatment processes and advancing the use of MFCs in energy-independent wastewater treatment systems.
