It is only in exceptional cases that the shape of an ice sheet can be calculated by analytical methods. Some examples of situations in which this is possible will be discussed in chapter 6. In most cases numerical methods have to be used, particularly when we are not only interested in steady states, but also want to compute the transient behaviour of an ice sheet.
