Abstract

The chapter delves into the numerical investigation of Barcelos Bridge, a medieval masonry arch bridge, using a discrete macro-element modeling approach. It highlights the challenges and uncertainties in assessing such historical structures, particularly focusing on the material properties and failure modes. The study employs the Discrete Macro-Element Method (DMEM) to model the bridge, validating it against a finite element model. The DMEM approach is shown to be effective in capturing the bridge's structural behavior under gravity and seismic loads, demonstrating its potential as a practical tool for professionals in the field. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for further studies using the DMEM approach to address additional challenges, such as foundation settlements and hydrodynamic thrusts, which have been linked to recent bridge collapses.
