Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of insulation quality in high voltage equipment, highlighting the role of partial discharges (PDs) in deteriorating insulation. It reviews various mathematical methods for localizing PDs, including neural networks, fuzzy logic, and wavelet transforms. The authors introduce a new method for pinpointing PDs using the transient voltage spectrum recorded at a single location on a hydrogenerator coil, supported by numerical analysis and experimental validation. This method leverages the natural resonances of the structure and the superposition principle to recognize simultaneous discharges, even in different coils. The chapter also includes a detailed description of the experimental setup and results, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method in accurately localizing PDs. The unique approach presented in this chapter offers a significant advancement in the field of PD detection and localization.
