Abstract

This chapter delves into the thermal behavior during the drilling of GFRP/Al stack composites, focusing on the oblique cutting configuration. The study introduces a mechanistic model designed to estimate temperature generation and assess thermally induced damage. Key topics include the impact of cutting speed on interface temperature, the use of Hashin’s model for GFRP failure prediction, and the application of the Johnson-Cook model for aluminum alloy behavior. The research highlights the significance of thermal discontinuity at the interface and the effects of cutting speed on temperature localization. Results indicate that increased cutting speeds lead to higher temperatures due to severe friction, with the GFRP phase being particularly sensitive. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding these thermal dynamics for enhancing the structural integrity and longevity of GFRP/Al composites.
