Abstract

The article explores the propagation of water waves over bottom geometries, focusing on infinite and finite steps, which are idealizations of continental shelves. It revisits and enhances previous studies by Newman and Ray et al., using the Galerkin approximation to solve integral equations derived from Havelock’s wavemaker theory. The research presents a detailed formulation of the boundary value problem for both infinite and finite step cases, employing non-orthogonal basis functions to handle singularities at the step’s edge. The article highlights the convergence and accuracy of the numerical solutions, validating them against energy balance relations and previous findings. It also examines the effects of the angle of incidence, frequency, and depth ratio on reflection and transmission coefficients, providing critical insights into wave behavior in marine settings. The study concludes with a comparison of results for different step configurations, offering a robust framework for understanding water wave scattering in complex marine environments.
