We have been following automotive cybersecurity in The Hansen Report since 2013, but the topic hasn't necessarily been top-of-mind to many carmakers, until recently. Brandon Barry is a certified information systems security professional and CEO of Block Harbor Cybersecurity. We asked him why automakers are finally taking cybersecurity more seriously. “The main driver is a cybersecurity regulation that goes into full force in July 2024,” he said. “Think of it as the contractual requirements for the automotive supply chain. Everyone has to do their part to meet this regulation.” Barry is referring to UNECE WP.29 R155, which outlines requirements related to cybersecurity and the cybersecurity management systems for vehicles. Compliance with the regulation is mandatory for obtaining type approval in Europe, Japan and South Korea. While compliance with the WP.29 regulation is not required in the United States, US carmakers must conform to R155 if they want to sell their vehicles abroad. “R155 is a check-the-box regulation,” said Barry. “You check the boxes and you get the stamp of approval. You can have a perfectly compliant vehicle that is not secure,” he cautioned. …
