Abstract

This chapter presents a novel approach to decomposing race results in endurance sports into two distinct components: race conditions and individual performance levels. The method uses nonnegative matrix factorization to separate these components, providing a data-driven way to analyze and compare race results. The chapter discusses the motivation and assumptions behind the decomposition model, as well as its technical details and implications for analyzing race data. The method is particularly suitable for endurance sports where individual performance is the dominant factor, such as road races in running and time trial competitions in cycling. The chapter also presents extensive experimental results on real-world data from regional road races in running, as well as simulated data. These results demonstrate the method's robustness and stability, even with a high missing value rate. The chapter concludes by discussing the potential applications of the method, such as comparing race results of athletes who did not compete in the same race and identifying favorable race conditions for future race schedule planning.
