Abstract

The digital shift has made videoconferencing a staple in both personal and professional communication, but network performance issues can significantly degrade the user experience. This article explores the quality of WebRTC-based videoconferencing under adverse and mobility scenarios, focusing on how platforms like Elos and Google Meet adapt to maintain user experience. The study highlights the importance of real-time performance monitoring and detailed application measurements in understanding and improving videoconferencing quality. By comparing the performance of these platforms under static and dynamic network conditions, the article provides valuable insights into the strategies and mechanisms employed to handle network degradation. The detailed analysis of metrics such as bitrate, frame rate, and quantization parameters offers a comprehensive view of how these platforms prioritize and adapt video quality in response to varying network conditions. The findings underscore the complexity of managing real-time communication in mobile environments and the need for continuous improvement in adaptation mechanisms to enhance user experience. The article also discusses the potential biases and challenges associated with browser-platform integration, emphasizing the importance of accurate network bandwidth estimation and device processing capabilities. Overall, the study contributes to the development of more robust and adaptive videoconferencing solutions, paving the way for future research in quality of experience (QoE) estimation and dynamic quality adaptation strategies.
