The need to reduce emissions from combustion engines is presenting their developers and manufacturers with major difficulties. Cold starts and short-distance operation in particular, but also hybridization require new technologies for effective exhaust aftertreatment. In this interview Bernd Danckert from ICCL and Robert Szolak from Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE consider new and existing emission reduction technologies and propose some possible solutions.
Dipl.-Ing. Robert Szolak (born 1972) studied process engineering at the University of Applied Science in Furtwangen after training as a physical-technical assistant at the Naturwissenschaftlich-Technische Akademie Isny. In 2000, he began his diploma thesis at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg (Germany) and subsequently took over the project management of numerous industrial and publicly funded projects in the field of catalysis and process development. In 2015, he took over as head of a team in the Department of Thermochemical Processes with the aim of increasing their energy efficiency, reducing CO2 and exhaust gas emissions. Since 2017, Szolak has been Head of Process Development with a focus on emission reduction, catalysis and the use of renewable fuels in applications.
