Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive study on the design and evaluation of an online professional development (OPD) program aimed at preparing afterschool educators to teach an elementary STEM curriculum focused on cryptology and cybersecurity. The curriculum, titled CryptoComics, was designed to be engaging and accessible, featuring a digital app, unplugged activities, and a comic book. The OPD was a three-day, 21-hour synchronous event held over Zoom, which walked educators through the entire curriculum, addressing their knowledge gaps and providing practical learning activities. The evaluation of the OPD was conducted using Kirkpatrick's framework, assessing reactions, learning, transfer, and results. Educators generally had positive reactions, feeling comfortable and confident with the content, and the curriculum implementation showed high completion rates and significant student learning gains. However, some educators struggled with complex topics, suggesting a need for supplementary resources. The study contributes to the literature on OPD best practices and highlights the importance of quality professional learning for afterschool educators in STEM fields.
