Abstract

The article introduces a novel fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy for encoderless Y-connected 3-phase induction motors (IM 3P) under open-phase faults. It addresses the significant challenges posed by stator winding faults, rotor faults, power converter faults, and sensor faults in IM 3P drives. The proposed FTC system utilizes a 2-leg inverter topology and a modified vector control (VC) strategy to ensure the motor's performance during fault conditions. The study develops a model reference adaptive system (MRAS) estimator to estimate the motor speed accurately during both normal and faulty operations. The article highlights the stability analysis of the MRAS estimator and its robustness against parameter changes and PI controller settings. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed FTC technique, demonstrating improved performance and reduced torque ripple compared to existing methods. The study concludes with a comparison of different controllers for IM 3P drives under fault conditions, emphasizing the superiority of the proposed method in terms of accuracy and simplicity.
