Abstract

This chapter delves into the optimal configuration methods for power-energy hybrid storage systems (PEHSSs) in renewable power plants (RPPs). It begins by addressing the challenges posed by the volatile and random output of renewable energy sources, emphasizing the need for hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) to improve grid-related performance. The chapter introduces a framework for optimizing the configuration of HESSs, utilizing empirical mode decomposition (EMD) to separate high-frequency and low-frequency components of renewable energy output. High-frequency fluctuations are managed through power-type energy storage, while low-frequency components are addressed with energy-type storage. The text also discusses various types of energy storage systems, including lithium-ion batteries, flow batteries, and supercapacitors, highlighting their technical features and maturity levels. Case studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed configuration methods, showing significant reductions in power fluctuations and improved system stability. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of reasonable and effective configuration of HESS capacity for the economic and secure operation of renewable energy plants.
