Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical role of optimally designed transit networks in facilitating efficient, accessible, and affordable mobility in cities. It discusses the challenges of transit-related problems such as congestion, pollution, and accidents, and how optimized networks can minimize these issues. The Transit Network Design Problem (TNDP) is introduced as a multi-objective optimization problem, focusing on strategic and tactical planning to balance the needs of users, operators, and authorities. The chapter emphasizes the use of simulation-based optimization techniques, particularly activity-based travel demand simulations, to evaluate and design transit networks. This approach accounts for the stochastic behavior of network stakeholders, making it more effective than traditional methods. The chapter also presents a case study of the MyCiTi bus rapid transit network in Cape Town, South Africa, demonstrating the practical application of the proposed simulation-based optimization framework. The results highlight the potential of this method in designing efficient and balanced transit networks that cater to the needs of both commuters and operators.
