Abstract

The article investigates the optimization of epoxy resins through the integration of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and aluminum particles, focusing on enhancing mechanical properties and sustainability. The study highlights the unique advantages of CNSL, a bio-based additive rich in phenolic compounds, which improves the flexibility, toughness, and thermal stability of epoxy matrices. Aluminum particles, particularly in nano-scale form, are shown to significantly enhance tensile strength and thermal conductivity by acting as load transfer agents and thermal bridges. The research systematically varies CNSL content (10–40 wt.%) and maintains a constant aluminum loading (2.5 wt.%) to explore the balance between flexibility and rigidity. Key findings include a remarkable 411% increase in tensile strength and a 98% improvement in flexural modulus for the optimal composite formulation, containing 30 wt.% CNSL and 2.5 wt.% nano-aluminum. The study also addresses challenges such as particle agglomeration and viscosity management, providing insights into processing behaviors and potential applications in aerospace, automotive, and structural engineering. The comprehensive analysis of mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties underscores the potential of these hybrid composites for sustainable, high-performance materials.
