Abstract

This chapter delves into the optimization of factors influencing the performance properties of bitumen-stabilized materials (BSM), a sustainable and cost-effective solution for road construction. The study focuses on the impact of ambient temperature (AT) and bitumen emulsion content (BEC) on the mechanical properties of BSM, using response surface methodology (RSM) for experimental design and optimization. Key findings reveal that higher AT leads to improved mix strength and durability, while lower AT results in poor mix quality and reduced strength. The chapter also explores the role of various factors such as pre-wetting water content, bitumen droplet size, and aggregate characteristics in the dispersion of bitumen emulsion. Additionally, it discusses the environmental benefits of BSM, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and optimized resource utilization. The study concludes with practical recommendations for optimizing BSM mix design parameters to enhance performance and longevity of pavement structures.
